OVERVIEW
Neutron stars are compact stars whose average density exceeds the normal nuclear matter density. In order to resolve and understand the various astrophysical phenomena which are relevant to neutron stars, investigation on the various phases of quantum chromo dynamics (QCD) and the equation of state (EOS) based on the fundamental symmetries are required. Hence quarks and compact stars are the major topics in modern astrophysics, nuclear physics, and particle physics. In 2017, gravitational waves from the merger of a neutron star binary have been detected followed by the detections of electromagnetic waves from the same source in various wave lengths, including gamma-ray, X-ray, optical, and radio. Combining the distance estimation from gravitational waves and the red shift from electromagnetic observations, even the Hubble constant has been measured. These observations opened a new era of Multi-messenger astronomy and astrophysics, which include gravitational waves, electromagnetic waves, and even neutrinos. In order to discuss recent achievements and exchange new ideas among three Asian countries, we are organizing an interdisciplinary workshop on quarks and compact stars. |
